Utility and Roadway Applications of LED Lighting

Why You Can Expect To See More Smart Cell Poles

California’s Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is leading the way toward LED roadway lighting in California. The advantages of an LED retrofit spread wide, from changes saving municipalities money to the aiding motorists using the public highways. The benefits of LED streetlamps far exceed the potential of traditional solutions, changing the purpose and appearance of the average CA utility pole. California is making the switch to LED- here is why:

Energy Efficiency

LED is taking the lead in terms of luminous efficiency in lighting when compared to high-pressure sodium lamps. Previously, high-pressure sodium was revered for its efficient performance, but currently LED is moving ahead with their obvious energy-saving advantages.

Dimming

Typical streetlamps are limited in terms of dimming options and potential. LED provides dimming control that ranges from none to 100% dimmed- at the touch of a button. This flexibility helps towns and cities better address public lighting and safety through the smart lighting system.

Longevity

LED lasts longer than other bulb and lighting options. Typically, LED outlives high-pressure sodium streetlamps and road lighting by at least ten times.

Color Rendering

High-pressure sodium lamps have the worst color rendering, rated around 20 in the color rendering index Ra. LED, on the other hand, offers an index Ra of around 80, proving it has much better rendering, reflection, and visual acuity on the California roads and highways.

Response

It takes a moment for incandescent lamp lights to start up; the reaction and response time is not immediate. LED takes nanoseconds and there is no waiting time to restart the bulb or fixture.

Durability

LED does not contain the glass and filament components of other types of bulbs and lights. LED is strong and less vulnerable, making it a durable choice for municipal lighting needs.

Carbon Footprint

LED is more eco-friendly than other types of lighting, recyclable after being discarded so it does not leave a carbon footprint behind. It is safer and less toxic to produce than high-pressure sodium lamps, which are comprised of mercury and other harmful substances.

Cost Savings

When discussing municipal changes, it really comes down to cost. It is estimated that LED costs more to implement but has the potential to save money over time. The savings in maintenance, electricity, and manpower can more than compensate for these far more efficient lighting options. Only time can reveal the full extent of the savings.
