From Smart Businesses to Smart Homes – LED Lighting is Paving the Way

LED Lighting

LEDs are a semiconductor based technology, which allows them to connect with a building’s electrical source through computer ethernet cables or WiFi. This creates amazing flexibility in how these lights are used and controlled.

Businesses as well as smart homes can:

  • Turn lights on and off from a computer, smartphone, or other selected device.
  • Set lights to automatically dim or turn off next to sunny windows and darken or brighten during evening hours.
  • Sense when a room or space is unused and turn off or dim the lights.
  • Set “scenes.” For instance, in the morning, the kitchen’s dedicated lights go on over the coffee maker, and the room gradually brightens over an hour’s time. This is helpful for employees who may need to “ease” their way into their workday!
  • Change a color – which is more than a gimmick. LED lighting can change to different shades of white for reading, sewing, hobby tasks, or other activities. It can also change from white to blue for television watching, since blue does not reflect off of the screen.
  • Enhance shopping experiences in a retail store or showroom by adjusting tones and colors depending on where a customer stands relative to a display or product.
  • Link sensors and artificial intelligence to autonomously operate a building based on use, needs, and expectations.
  • Manage costs. Many utility companies have a time-of-use pricing system. LED lighting systems can dim lighting in little-used areas during peak cost times to save money.

It’s only a matter of time before the typical outdoor LED lights in parks, parking lots, and pedestrian walkways (among other areas) will have similar capabilities. This will most certainly elevate “smart cities” into brilliant ones!
