Bright Minds Come Together Around LED Lighting
With so many new developments in the green outdoor lighting industry – particularly here in the Bay Area where progressive energy policies are transforming the landscape — cities exploring new lighting possibilities can’t keep up. Interestingly, when multiple cities implement independent projects to test different lighting updates, effort duplication is inevitable. Many projects possess similar designs and differ only by location. Great minds in city planning think alike. This has some benefits (e.g. increases the scalability of engineering that works) and some drawbacks (e.g. reduces the number of creative “lighting system experiments” that could teach us things about efficiency and utility).
The Department of Energy developed its Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium to improve efficiency and effectiveness for cities investigating the possibility of switching to municipal LED street lighting. Under this program:
- Each participating city installs a small amount of LED lighting and contributes test data to a large pool.
- DOE compiles all data and uses consistent evaluation techniques to ensure the quality of results.
- All participants have access to the expansive body of knowledge the consortium generates, allowing them to move forward with their own lighting program with fewer expenses and setbacks.
- Members can discuss questions and concerns in an open forum to facilitate enhanced understanding for all involved cities.
- All consortium participants can contribute to the development of future testing structures.
