LED Lighting Distribution Types and Benefits
Important Outdoor LED Lighting Information to Consider
An outdoor LED lighting solution can provide energy efficiency and brilliant light for many different settings. Before investing in this technology, however, Bay Area companies and municipalities should take the time to understand the distribution types. Review and understand these before pitching any stakeholders or investing in LED solutions for your outdoor space:
- Type I. Type I offers the most focused beams. While not ideal for LED street lighting, this solution can illuminate narrow pathways, such as sidewalks and park paths. This type may be useful to promote secure walkways and lots.
- Type II. This is a mid-range luminary. Municipalities commonly use these lights in larger walkways and on some roadways that don’t require fuller or more robust coverage. Placed towards the side of a pathway these can achieve good ambient coverage.
- Type III. Commonly used for LED roadway lighting, these lights are also designed for a side-placement, and they yield an even light disbursement, since the beam projects out.
- Type IV. Look for these lights to use on walls and to illuminate building sides. Type IV LED lighting also offers wide driveway coverage with similar beam intensity at different angles.
- Type V and VS. Used in central circular and square designs, these lighting solutions offer the same disbursement equally across all angles from a central point. Often installed in intersections, parking islands, and in large park areas, these lights clearly define a range of light.
The nature of your application, pricing and energy concerns, maintenance needs and the users of your end products (e.g. business people using a walkway, consumers who need safe parking garages, restaurant owners who want to create inviting spaces) will all influence your choices.
