Progress of Outdoor LED Lighting: Slow but Controlled

Why the Municipal LED Lighting Market Has a Bright Future

If you’re like most people, you haven’t given much thought to municipal LED street lighting or LED roadway lighting, but these forms of outdoor lighting design have made roadways safer and the streets of municipalities much safer over the past decade. During that time, efficiency improvements occurred slowly and steadily, while issues related to contrast and visual acuity were repeatedly considered and addressed in research and in improvements made to LED technology.

Over-lighting was linked to fixture design and needing the ideal orientation, placement, and number of fixtures on a given project. Many organizations developed new test methods, and worked on stricter performance standards, leading industry gurus to observe that more was being expected of LED lighting than was ever expected from high-intensity discharge (HID) lighting.

LED Controls
The one thing that makes LED lighting so extraordinarily flexible and capable is the fact that it can be controlled to such a high degree. Not only can LED lighting be managed by simple dimming controls, but also by such complex controls as motion sensors, photo sensors, and timers. In addition, it can be integrated with network interfaces, complete software programmability, and with wireless communications which are returned to a centralized system.

This has been the major reason that municipalities, federal governing bodies, energy service companies, and utility companies have all reached the same conclusion – that controls are the single most important aspect of LED development and design in the modern world.

However, implementing these controls in a cost-effective manner has not and will not come without its challenges. The market for LED’s is booming, and new opportunities are opening up all the time, for instance with the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), smart cities, and machine-to-machine communications. The important directive for all people involved in the LED industry is to maintain an open line of communications, and appropriately disseminate relevant information on technologies which are emerging, and which may have relevance to LED lighting now and in the future.
