Stockton Fights Budget Cuts with Energy Efficient LED Lighting

Stockton, California, Upgrades Municipal LED Street Lighting

LED light poles CaliforniaThe city of Stockton expects to save around $1.8 million yearly with the replacement and retrofitting of municipal LED street lighting. The city will replace nearly 28,000 mercury-vapor lights and 8,500 light poles during the course of the three year project, which started in summer of 2014.

LED street lighting technology has proven effective in reducing energy costs while ensuring better light quality in a number of applications. Stockton hopes to significantly reduce the expenses associated with street lighting by introducing new, more energy efficient alternatives. The city’s council reported that over half of Stockton’s energy bill during 2012 and 2013 had gone to pay for street lighting. By moving to a LED roadway lighting paradigm, Stockton could substantially slash that line item.

Unlike the old lighting systems, some of which have been in place for as long as 80 years, LED systems are recyclable and non-toxic. As part of Stockton’s project, engineers replaced many of the old light poles with new Valmont decorative lighting poles.

Stockton’s decision to move forward with the LED renovation didn’t happen over night. Significant budget cuts — including the elimination of 300 jobs – helped force action. While the project will take an investment of roughly $14 million, the city expects to recoup that money in a matter of a few years.
