The Economics of Solar Lighting: A Pickleball Court Analysis

Solar lighting technology has advanced significantly in the past 10 years. Costs have come down, largely because of improving battery technology, and reliability has greatly improved. But is it more cost effective than AC line voltage? GBL recently worked with a client to compare the total cost of ownership (TCO) of lighting a pickleball court with a solar lighting system, compared to using a traditional line voltage sports lighting system. Included in the analysis was labor, material, the cost of energy, and maintenance over a 20 year operating period. The analysis started with a two-court project, and lighting the “principal play area” (PPA) to IES RP6-22, Class IV (USPS Class III) requirements.
